Why having access to a school counsellor is important

All children and young people deserve to have good access to mental health support, to enable them to grow up equipped with the tools they need to understand and support their mental wellbeing as they move into adulthood.

It is the sad reality that sometimes school is the only safe place for children and young people. Having access to a school counsellor enables the young person to seek support, when it may otherwise not be available to them. Mental health is a growing concern and whilst young people can be incredibly resilient and able to bounce back from adversity, the key is to provide psychological support at the point of need, to avoid mental health deterioration and problems becoming much worse.

With mental health issues on the rise in young people, waiting lists are becoming longer with many never having access to psychological support.

How I can support your students

I provide a space, where students are given the opportunity to explore whatever might be going on them and work through their difficulties, in a safe and confidential setting built on trust. Having that one to one support is so important because children and young people grow it adolescence with very different and unique pressures on their life’s. Having mental health support can literally be life changing for a young person, whom otherwise feel lost, alone and hopeless.

Over the past 7.5 years working as a school counsellor, I’ve come to realise that many children and young people feel they have nobody to talk to and feel no option to struggle through lives transitions alone.

Listed below are just some of the more common presenting conditions I work with in schools;

  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Depression
  • Anger
  • Behaviour
  • Family breakdown
  • Relationship issues
  • Bullying
  • Self esteem
  • Self harm
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Body Image
  • Abuse & trauma
  • Disordered eating
  • Intrusive thoughts

Testimonials from students

I really enjoy my sessions with Michelle. It helps me to cope knowing that I have someone I can trust to speak to every week about problems.

The sessions are really fun and creative and they really helped me to control my anger. My behaviour at school and home is better and I feel happier.

When I first started counselling, some day’s I couldn’t even come to school because my anxiety was so bad. Talking about it helped me to understand what was causing it and I have learned some really good techniques to help me manage my feelings better.

Services

  • One to one sessions
  • Group work for different presenting conditions
  • Workshops

I work in a person centred way, whilst also integrating different approaches in accordance to each clients needs, such as solution focused or CBT. I also recognise that engaging in talking therapies can be challenging for some children and young people, so I am very flexible and adaptable in my approach.

I incorporate play, art based and creative ways of working into my practice, to put clients at ease and to help them to get the most out of therapy in a way that feels most comfortable for them.
